Established in 2005, The Elk & Oarsman is Banff's premier sports pub & restaurant.

The timber & river rock décor & beautiful stone fireplace make The Elk & Oarsman a favorite for locals & tourists from around the world. The Elk offers the best in food, live entertainment, twelve draft selections and true hospitality.

Our summertime rooftop patio offers an amazing 360° view of rocky mountain scenery, and in cooler weather our inviting wood burning fireplace will warm you as you relive a day on the slopes.

Visit our "Events" page for a listing of daily specials.

Come on in and bring your friends!

Our General Manager Minimize

Randy McGonnell came to Banff “just for the winter” in 1989; but the people and the beauty grabbed his heart and here in Banff he stayed.   He was born and raised in Montreal (he’s proud of his bi-lingual heritage) and migrated to the Maritimes before finding Banff.  His career in the hospitality industry spans two decades.  He was part of the team that opened the first Hard Rock Café in Banff in 1996 and the first Whitespot in Calgary in 2003.   Through the  2000’s he worked at The Bow River Barley Mill and the Rose and Crown before coming to the Elk and Oarsman upon its opening in 2005.

He likes to ski and golf; but his true passion is his work.

~“I love the community here in Banff.  There is the feeling of belonging to a large extended family.”

Our Executive Chef Minimize

Chef Mark ("Marko") Steinke  has been turning out creative dishes for the Elk and Oarsman since it opened in 2005.   Born and raised in Winnipeg, he came to Alberta in 2000 and has never felt the urge to leave.  For Chef Marko, the only thing that beats creating new dishes is spending time at the cabin which he built at Lake Kocanusa.  And, of course, he loves to ski.

He has come up through the ranks at some of Canada’s finest dining establishments including The Bow River Barley Mill in Calgary; Branagain at the Forks in 1997 and Reminton's Seafood and Steakhouse in 1999.

~“I like to take advantage of our wide range of fresh, local ingredients … meats, cheese, produce..it all comes together to create what I like to call Rocky Mountain comfort food.”
